Wouldn't friendship be the more natural and thus the best foundation? When I ask this question, I am referring to our friendship towards both God and man. Trust develops out of friendship.

It is interesting that the first 4 of the 10 commandments deal with our relationship to God. Then the remaining 6 deal with our relationship with people. An excellent commentary of the commandments is found in 1 John 3. John gives a description of the meaning of the commandments which are in full agreement with what Jesus said in the sermon he preached starting in Matt. 5. Jesus even includes a model prayer.

"Here is a last piece of advice. If you believe in goodness and if you value the approval of God, fix your minds on the things which are holy and right and pure and beautiful and good. Model your conduct on what you have learned from me, on what I have told you and shown you, and you will find the God of peace will be with you."

I once heard a sermon where it was said that the fourth commandment, the sabbath command, works as a bridge between the 3 first that deal soley with the man-God relationship on one hand and the 6 last witch deal with the man-man relationship. The sabbath command in this view deal with both the God-man and man-man relationships. Thoughts?

I would not argue with you!

Interesting thought about the 4th Commandment in relation the first three and the last six.

I must say that I do not have any problem with this interesting thought.

Because I agree with the thought that the 4th Commandment, as stated in your post, "deals with both the God-man and man-man relationships."

For example, do we obey the speed limit all the time? If not, do we only disregard it when God commands us to do so?

Both my foster son and I have driven way above the speed limit.

In all the cases you mentioned, I can see how God could require you to break the speed limit. Fortunately for you, your human government agreed with your assessment.

But what if they gave you a ticket anyway? Or if they threw you in jail? (In the U.S., you can go to jail if you exceed a certain speed.) Would you still do what you did? Would you to it happily, and rejoice that you were able to do God's bidding, regardless of the temporal consequences?

By God's grace,
Arnold

There is no excuse for any one in taking the position that there is no more truth to be revealed, and that all our expositions of Scripture are without an error. The fact that certain doctrines have been held as truth for many years by our people, is not a proof that our ideas are infallible. Age will not make error into truth, and truth can afford to be fair. No true doctrine will lose anything by close investigation. RH 12/20/1892

There is also Trust and Justice which is the title in Wednesday's section.

What is the difference between trust and friendship from trust and justice?

How does Solomon see it?

How do we see it?

Some questions are difficult to answer. In certain countries the law permits you to break the speed limit in emergencies, and the police know this law too.

But one of my sons told me of a voluteer fireman who had a light blinker on top of his pickup to be used when on his way to a fire. He experienced how he turned on this blinker too if he notice the police in the vicinity when he was driving too fast. Was that a true emergency?
